bharatnatyam

We were part of the Sheena and Nakita’s achievement. It was held on The Sara Ellen & Samuel Weisfeld Center. As we have covered many Indian events I know how rich they are and how unique each of them is.

The show was about the typical south Indian Dance called Bharatnatyam.Dancers were dressed in Sarees (typical south Asian Dress) but those sarees were different from one we normally see. They were bright orange and yellow, with lots of folds in the front.

They had ankle bells on their feet, which would give an extra music to the dance ( like eastern European uses boots in tap dance). However, the best part of dance was the facial expression and eye movement. As often misunderstood, Bharatnatyam did not get its name from Bharat ( native name for India) and natyam (Dance in Sanskrit) but that was not the case. According to the booklet, Bharata is derived from Bha-Bhava (Expression) ra-raga( Melody) and ta-taala (rhythm) .

This dance was originated around 1000 B.C.Sheena and Nakita were two dancers who performed throughout the show. They were both trained by Ms. Bela Vasavada. It started with Ganesha stuti. According to the hindu mythology, every auspicious occasion should be started with Ganesha’s pray.It started with slow paced dance and music but musical tempo and dance pace gradually increased simultaneously. It started with a prayer and ended with a prayer.
